Porcupew is my 2D Shooter project for the MSU's Coursera course Game Design and Development 1.

Modifications:

  • Changed control scheme.
  • Created new player assets to fit theme of a porcupine shooting needles at opponents. This includes the player sprite, quill projectiles (one of six variations selected at random), and the associated sound effects.
  • Made new obstacle assets (a variety of bushes, rocks, and tree stumps) and decorative sprites (grasses).
  • Switched out all the audio assets.
  • Redid menus to fit theme, including artwork. Pause screen includes animated element and replaces the level music.
  • Added Credits screen.

DIDN'T get to:

  • Fixing performance issues. I changed the control scheme (steer with Left/Right, and always shoot forwards) and it worked great in Unity but the porcupine turned really slowly in the builds, so I reverted it. I'd rather the porcupine move that way... Lesson learned, should have been making actual builds more often!
  • Replacing death and hit animations - they are still the ship ones, which is pretty silly given porcupines and frogs.
  • Replacing enemy projectile (should be bubbles)
  • Significant level design
